Fugel Scores Twice as GSU Moves to 1-0 in Conference Action

LAFAYETTE, La. -- Brooklynn Fugel scored a pair of goals Thursday afternoon to lead Georgia State to a 3-1 win at Louisiana to open Sun Belt play.

The Panthers improve to 6-2-1 on the season and push their unbeaten streak to six matches. GSU fell behind 1-0 early against the Ragin' Cajuns but scored three unanswered goals to collect the win.

Down 1-0 in the 19th minute, Maddie Johnston took a shot towards goal and Fugel got a foot on it to deflect it into the back of the net. The score would remain 1-1 through halftime.

Jimena Cabrero scored her second goal of the season to put GSU in front in the 60th minute. Cabrero dribbled past a handful of Louisiana defenders and got a final touch with her right foot to sneak the ball past the Ragin' Cajuns' keeper. It was Cabrero's eighth career game-winning goal, moving her into a tie for fifth in GSU's record books.

Fugel added her second goal of the game, and team-leading fourth of the season, with just under five minutes to play to put the game out of reach. Bree Barley found Fugel on a cross for her first career assist.

Maria Subies got the start in goal and recorded four saves, but exited the game shortly before halftime after a collision in the box. Jaddah Foos stepped into the goal and held Louisiana scoreless over the final 47 minutes, tallying a pair of saves.

Georgia State has won five of its last six matches and has now won its conference opener for the third consecutive season. GSU travels to San Marcos, Texas to face Texas State at 1 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPN+.
