ATLANTA - The Georgia State volleyball team dropped consecutive matches, 1-3, to Davidson (28-26, 24-26, 23-25, 20-25) and North Florida (25-22, 21-25, 13-25, 20-25) Saturday at the UNF Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
After dropping a promising five-set thriller to Virginia Tech Friday, Georgia State looked to bounce back in it's two matches on Saturday against Davidson and host North Florida. In both contests', the Panthers came out aggressive and dominated set one before dropping the following three sets.
For the day, the Panthers were led by Erin Wyatt who accumulated 25 kills and 24 digs in the two matches. So far this season, the Spring, Texas native leads the team with 59 kills, while ranking second in digs with 64.
Evoni Lemons saw her first action as a Panther against North Florida and logged four kills and three digs.
Claire Lewis continued her stellar freshman campaign on Saturday as she tallied 47 assists and 18 digs for the day. Ava Vlkovic also continued her strong start to the 2021 campaign as the dynamic sophomore logged 37 digs for the day.
MATCH ONE
Looking to avenge it's narrow defeat to Virginia Tech on Friday, Georgia State came out aggressive in its first match of the day against Davidson. The Panthers opened the match on a 8-3 run, before a 6-0 run from Davidson gave the Wildcats a one point lead. The remainder of the set was tightly contested, but Georgia State prevailed to earn the 28-26 victory. Leah Wilcox and Erin Wyatt were the difference-makers in the first set as they registered four kills each.
After dropping the first set, Davidson responded by reeling off three consecutive set victories to win the match, 3-1. Although the Wildcats won each of the final three sets, each set was competitive as the three sets featured eight lead changes and 24 tied scores. For the match, the Wildcats were led by Hattie Rodriguez and Isabel Decker who both tallied 12 kills.
MATCH TWO
Like Georgia State's first match of the day, the Panthers got off to a blistering start in their match against host North Florida. GSU started the match on a 9-0 run, which featured two kills from Wyatt. North Florida responded with a series of small runs, but Georgia State held on for a 25-22 set victory. Wyatt led the Panthers with five kills and five digs in set one.
Unlike set one, set two was a back-and-forth affair from the first serve. The set featured nine tied scores and four lead changes before North Florida put together a 7-3 run to take the 25-21 victory. The Panthers back row was active in set two as three players tallied four or more digs. Julianna Truscott led the Panthers offensively with four kills.
After playing to a 1-1 ledger, North Florida established its dominance and won the following two sets by a combined score of 50-34 to win the match. For the contest, North Florida was led by Darian Hollingsworth-Santana who notched a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs.
UP NEXT
Georgia State will look to bounce back next weekend as the Panthers welcome Alcorn State, Stetson and Presbyterian to Atlanta for another two-day tournament at GSU Sports Arena. Action will start on Friday when GSU faces Alcorn State at 10 a.m.
