Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Thomas’ Double-Double Leads Panthers to 61-50 Win at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C.-Junior Jalen Thomas recorded his second double-double of the season to lead the Georgia State men's basketball team to its fourth win in the last five games with a 61-50 victory over Coastal Carolina at the HTC Center on Thursday night.

Georgia State (10-10, 4-5 Sun Belt) extracted revenge on Coastal Carolina (12-10, 4-6 Sun Belt) from a defeat in Atlanta last month and continued its climb up the conference standings after starting league play 0-4.

Thomas finished with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds while shooting 5-8 from the floor.

Senior Kane Williams led the Panthers with 18 points going 11-of-15 from the free throw line. Williams is already the school leader in both free throws made, and free throws attempted. Redshirt-junior Nelson Phillips just missed a double-double with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Senior Corey Allen finished with seven points to become the 24th Panther in program history with 1,000 career points. He is closing in on 1,900 points after spending two years at Detroit.

Coastal Carolina was led by Vince Cole who scored 20 points, but the Chanticleers were held to just 27.1 percent shooting and 7-of-26 from 3-point range. Coastal turned the ball 17 times which led to 14 GSU points.

Thomas came out red-hot for the Panthers scoring nine points in the first seven minutes. His 3-pointer with 13:00 to play in the opening half gave GSU a 15-11 lead.

Georgia State kept the defensive pressure on holding Coastal without a field goal for more than eight minutes, as the Chanticleers went 0-of-13 from the floor. An Evan Johnson 3-pointer with 8:48 to play gave the Panthers an 18-11 lead after trailing by as many as five in the first half.

A Williams lay-up with 5:16 to play gave the Panthers their first double-digit lead. Just minutes later, Justin Roberts hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Georgia State a 30-15 lead with under four minutes to play in the opening half.

The Panthers went into the locker room with a 32-21 lead while holding Coastal to just 25.8 percent shooting and 2-of-9 from 3-point range.

A 3-pointer by Allen with 14:11 to play gave the senior his milestone achievement and the Panthers a 42-30 lead.

Minutes later, a 7-0 run capped by a Phillips free throw push the lead to 49-35 with 8:09 remaining.

Roberts knocked down a free throw with 3:54 to play to push Georgia State's lead to 57-41. Coastal Carolina would get no closer than nine in the final minutes of the game after Josh Uduje knocked down three 3-pointers during the stretch.

Evan Johnson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and finished with six points for Georgia State, while Roberts added nine points with five assists.
