Panthers Fall to Coastal Carolina

Senior Day is Saturday vs. Appalachian State

ATLANTA-- Georgia State fell to Coastal Carolina 69-62 in a Sun Belt Conference women's basketball game Thursday at the GSU Sports Arena.

Seniors Ashley Foster and Taniyah Worth led the Panthers with 12 points each, and freshman Alex Gitchenko.

Georgia State (8-12, 2-6 Sun Belt) held the Chanticleers to just 29 percent shooting from the field, but the difference in the game was at the free throw line, where Coastal Carolina (13-7, 3-6 Sun Belt) hit 30-of-36, including 22 straight to start the game. Meanwhile the Panthers were just 10-for-25 at the stripe.

The Panthers led by as many as six points in the first half before settling for a 32-all tie at the half. But Coastal Carolina opened the second half with 11 straight points to take a 43-32 lead. The Chanticleers led 47-35 five minutes into the half after making five of their first eight field goals while holding the Panthers to 1-for-8.

Coastal Carolina led by as many as 15 in the third quarter before the Panthers began to chip away. Taniyah Worth's 3-pointer made it 57-49 early in the fourth quarter. Worth hit another trey to make 60-54 with seven minutes to go, and then Elexus Bell's layup pulled GSU within 60-56 at the 6:41 mark.

The Chanticleers got their lead back to seven, but Ashley Foster hit from long range to again pull GSU within four at 65-61 with 2:11 left. But that was as close as the Panthers could get as Coastal Carolina sealed the win at the free throw line.

Four Chants finished in double figures, led by Arin Freeman with 19 points and Aja Blount with 16.

Georgia State's Alex Gitchenko, a freshman from Israel, tied her career high with nine points, with her mother in attendance for the first time this season. Oksana Gitchenko was a basketball standout herself, helping Ukraine to a fourth-place finish at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.

The Panthers play their final home game of the season on Saturday, hosting Appalachian State at 2 p.m. for Senior Day at the GSU Sports Arena.
