#StateNotSouthern Round 1 Goes to the Panthers, 79-63

ATLANTA-Georgia State came out red hot to start the second half to propel the Panthers to their fourth-straight win and sixth in the last seven games with a 79-63 win over in-state rival Georgia Southern on Thursday night at the GSU Sports Arena.

Georgia State (12-10, 6-5 Sun Belt) continued its climb up the conference standings after an 0-4 start in league play and now stand in a tie for fifth place, just two games out of first place, with three regular season games to play. The top four teams in the Sun Belt Conference standings earn a bye in the upcoming championship in Pensacola, Fla.

Senior Kane Williams led the Panthers with 21 points going 6-of-9 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Williams has made 53 of his last 60 free throw attempts over the last seven games.

Senior Eliel Nsoseme earned his third double-double of the season and ninth of his career with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow senior Corey Allen added 18 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the floor with three 3-pointers.

Georgia Southern (11-13, 4-9 Sun Belt) lost for the fourth-straight time as Kamari Brown led the Eagles with 17 points, while Andrei Savrasov added 14 points and nine rebounds.

After the Eagles scored the first basket of the game, Georgia State responded with a 7-0 run and led nearly the rest of the first half.

With the Panthers leading 22-15, Georgia Southern responded with a 7-0 run of its own to tie the game 22-22 with 6:17 to play before an Evan Johnson jumper in the lane gave GSU the lead once again.

A Tre Cobbs jumper in the lane gave the Eagles a 27-26 lead with 4:40 to play, but the Panthers immediately responded with a 6-0 run to take a 32-27 lead and went into the locker room with a 32-29 lead despite going just 2-of-9 from 3-point range.

Georgia State came out red hot in the second half knocking down nine of its first 12 shots. The Panthers used a 10-0 run capped by a pair of Williams free throws to take a 47-33 lead with 16:03 to play.

Minutes later, the Panthers used an 8-0 run capped by a pair of Williams free throws to take a 56-39 lead with just over 13 minutes to play. On the play, Williams became just the fourth Panther in program history with 1,500 or more career points.

The lead reached 20 for the first time on a 3-pointer by Allen with 12:07 to play and the rout was on. The Eagles would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the game.

Senior Justin Roberts added 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while freshman Ja'Heim Hudson added nine points and six rebounds.
