Men's Basketball

Williams Leads Panthers to 69-62 Win Over South Alabama

Box Score ATLANTA-Kane Williams finished as one of four Panthers in double figures as the Georgia State men's basketball team earned an 69-62 win over South Alabama on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena.

Georgia State (9-10, 3-5 Sun Belt) won for the third time in its last four games as Williams finished with 17 points going 11-of-11 from the free throw line. The Panthers finished the night 24-of-28 from the free throw line to overcome shooting just 36.4 percent from the floor.

Senior Eliel Nsoseme just missed his third double-double in the last seven games before finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds, while junior Jalen Thomas came off the bench to score 11 points and pull down five rebounds.

South Alabama (15-8, 5-5 Sun Belt) was led by Jay Jay Chandler who scored 26 points, going 9-of-14 from the floor. Javon Franklin added 10 points, but the Jaguars shot just 4-of-20 from 3-point range, including 1-of-11 in the second half.

Senior Justin Roberts also scored 10 points for the Panthers which turned 14 South Alabama turnovers into 17 points. Fellow senior Corey Allen added nine points, moving to within five points of 1,000 for his career at GSU.

Georgia State got off to a red-hot start taking an 18-4 lead just over seven minutes into the game as South Alabama made just one of its first eight shots and was forced to call an early timeout.

Diante Smith hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the Jaguars to cut Georgia State's lead to 22-14 with 8:36 to play, but that is as close as South Alabama would get before the break.

A Nelson Phillips putback slam dunk nearly brought the house down with just under five minutes to play and put the Panthers ahead 33-21.

Williams knocked down a 3-pointer at the first half buzzer to send the Panthers into the locker room with a 42-24 lead. Georgia State shot 50.0 percent in the opening 20 minutes while doubling-up the Jaguars on the boards, 20-10.

Despite being held for more than five minutes without a field goal early in the second half, following a pair of free throws by Hudson, Georgia State went ahead 56-33 with 12:24 to play. During the stretch, the Panthers went 10-of-10 from the free throw line.

South Alabama immediately responded with a 13-1 run, the first 11 points which were scored by Chandler, as the Jaguars cut the lead to 57-46 with 8:54 to play.

The Panthers stretch without a field goal was extended to more than eight minutes before a jumper in the lane by Thomas gave Georgia State a 59-47 lead with 7:34 to play.

A Roberts floater in the lane put Georgia State back ahead by double figures, 63-52, with 4:21 to play.

However, South Alabama responded with a 6-0 run to cut Georgia State's lead to 63-58 before a Ja'Heim Hudson free throw with 2:10 to play.

A 3-pointer by Kayo Gonvalves got the Jaguars within four with 29 seconds to play, but the Panthers knocked down 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
