With 2 Homers, 5 RBI and Save, Jones Leads Panthers to Series Win

ATLANTA -- Cameron Jones homered, drove in three runs and earned the save on the mound to lead Georgia State to a 10-6, series-clinching victory over Presbyterian in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex. Presbyterian took Game 1, 13-10.

The Panthers have won six of their last seven games to improve to 10-6 on the season.

For the day, Jones went 5-for-11 with two homers, two doubles and five RBI, along with the save, while DeAngelo Abboud had four hits and three RBI with a home run.

Georgia State travels to No. 19 Clemson (14-1) Tuesday at 6 p.m. before opening Sun Belt Conference play next weekend at home vs. Little Rock.

GAME 1: Presybyterian 13, Georgia State 10

Georgia State's late rally came up short in a 13-10 loss to Presbyterian in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader, snapping the Panthers' five-game winning streak.

Trailing 13-3 entering the eighth inning, the Panthers erupted for seven runs, including a two-run home run by Cameron Jones and a two-run double by Blaine Marchman. GSU sent 11 men to the plate in the inning and had six hits, including a homer, a triple, two doubles and two singles. The Panthers threatened for more but left the bases loaded in the inning.

In the ninth, Georgia State put runners at first and second with one out, but Presbyterian hung on for the win.

Jones, Dalton Pearson and Max Ryerson had two hits each in the game.

GAME 2: Georgia State 10, Presbyterian 6

Cameron Jones and DeAngelo Abboud each homered and drove in three runs, and Jones saved the game on the mound as Georgia State clinched a series win over Presbyterian with a 10-6 victory in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The game was tied at 6-all in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jones started a rally with a two-out single. After Griffin Cheney walked, Abboud delivered a single to right field to score Jones with the go-ahead run.

Jones then came on to pitch and struck out three in a scoreless eighth inning. In the bottom half, the Panthers added three key insurance runs. Max Ryerson's two-out double plated one run, and then Jones doubled to left center to bring home two more.

After allowing a leadoff single in the ninth, Jones retired the Blue Hose, striking out two of the next three batters to earn his fourth save of the season.

Georgia State fell behind 4-0 early before breaking through with two runs in the third on a wild pitch and then an RBI-single by Ryerson.

The Panthers tied the game in the fourth on Abboud's two-run homer, his first of the season.

Then Dalton Pearson hit the first pitch of the fifth inning over the left field fence for his first homer and a 5-4 lead. With one out, Jones smacked his second homer of the day to put the Panthers up 6-4.

Johnny Dow had a solid outing of the bullpen, allowing just one run in 3.1 innings with a career-high five strikeouts. Rafael Acosta (1-1) pitched a scorless seventh inning to earn his first win of the season.
