Softball Clinches Series with 8-5 Win Over App State

ATLANTA – After a bit of a slow start, the Georgia State bats came alive to help the Panthers earn an 8-5 win over Appalachian State in the final game of a three-game series at the Bob Heck Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Georgia State (12-17, 3-3 Sun Belt) scored six runs in the third inning after trailing Appalachian State (14-10, 3-3 Sun Belt) 3-0 to earn the series win and get back to .500 in league play. The Panthers are 4-1 on this current eight-game home stand.

Junior Daisy Hess continued her hot play as of late as one of four Panthers with multiple hits. Despite struggling a little in the circle, Sophie Mooney more than made up for it at the plate going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Mooney started the game for the Panthers but went just 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and three runs.

Emily Hodnett (2-3) came in relief to earn the win going 3.1 innings and allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out seven. Emily Buck earned her first save of the season pitching a scoreless seventh.

McKenzie McCullen got the Mountaineers on the board first with a two-run home run in the top of the second. Appalachian State added one more run in the top of the third before the bats heated up for the Panthers in the bottom of the third.

On a Mooney single to left, Emily Brown and Gabby Benson scored to cut the deficit to 3-2. Skylar Chavez followed with a single up the middle to score Mooney. A batter later, Jaycee Goodwin singled down the left field line scoring both Chavez and Hess to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead. Emily Hodnett rounded out the big inning with a single to right center, scoring Jackie Gonzalez.

Mooney provided more offense in the bottom of the fourth with a home run to left giving the Panthers a 7-3 lead.

Baylee Morton added solo home runs for Appalachian State in the top of the fifth and top of the seventh, while Carolyn Deady added a single to left in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Chavez to round out the scoring for both teams.

Kaylie Northrop (3-4) took the loss for the Mountaineers allowing six hits and five runs in just 2.1 innings.

Georgia State will continue its eight-game homestand hosting South Alabama for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 5 p.m., at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.
