Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Survive and Advance: Panthers Top Arkansas State 65-62 in Sun Belt Tournament Quarterfinals

PENSACOLA, Fla.-Kane Williams' steal with less than five seconds to play secured a wild Hercules Tires Sun Belt Conference Championship Quarterfinal game and gave the Georgia State men's basketball team a 65-62 win over Arkansas State on Saturday night at the Pensacola Bay Center.

Williams, who ironically set the Georgia State (16-10) career steals on the night finished with 23 points and six steals, going 8-of-13 from the floor and moving ahead of Rodney Hamilton with 215 career steals.

Eliel Nsoseme recorded his fourth double-double of the season and 10th of his career with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Corey Allen added 11 points. Nsoseme has now recorded a double-double in three of four Sun Belt Conference Tournament games he has played in.

Arkansas State (18-11) hung with the Panthers all night as Sun Belt Player of the Year Norchad Omier recorded a double-double of 21 points and 17 rebounds, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. It was Omier who helped the Red Wolves outrebound the Panthers 43-36.

However it was Georgia State's defense that held the Red Wolves without a field goal of the last 4:36 of the game that secured the win.

With the win, Georgia State won its eighth-straight game and for the 10th time in the last 11 games. It marked the second-straight year the Panthers topped Arkansas State in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

The Panthers have now won nine of the last 10 neutral court conference tournament games, including advancing to the championship game last season.

Arkansas State got off to a quick start taking a 12-6 lead following a Desi Sills lay-up and free throw with 14:44 to play.

Georgia State immediately responded with a 10-0 run as Justin Roberts took over. His jumper and free throw with 12:38 to play gave him the 1,000th point of his career, and his 3-pointer just minutes later capped a 10-0 run to give the Panthers a 19-14 lead with 11:39 remaining.

Roberts became the 25th Panther in program history to score 1,000 career points and finished the night with eight.

The run was extended to 14-2 and following a Roberts' steal and lay-up, the Panthers went ahead 23-16 with 8:36 to play.

Both teams went cold the remainder of the half, but Georgia State maintained at least a five-point lead and went into the half ahead 32-27 despite shooting just 35.3 percent and being outrebounded 23-19.

Allen scored six of the first eight points for the Panthers to open the second half and pushed GSU's lead to 40-31 with 15:57 to play.

When Arkansas State was called for a flagrant foul on Collin Moore, who hit both free throws, Georgia State took its first double-digit lead, 44-34, with 14:44 remaining.

However, the Red Wolves responded with a 7-0 run to cut Georgia State's lead to 44-41 with 11:52 to play, before a pair of Nsoseme free throws stopped the run.

Just minutes later, a Nsoseme lay-up put the Panthers back up by eight, 53-45. However, Arkansas State took a 58-57 lead with 4:36 to play as Davis hit a pair of 3-pointers and Omier scored a putback.

The Red Wolves held the Panthers without a field goal for more than four minutes, but Georgia State held its own at the free throw line to remain in the game.

A Williams 3-pointer with 1:47 to play put the Panthers ahead 64-60 and it proved to be enough as the Red Wolves made just two free throws in the final 63 seconds.

Junior Jalen Thomas added eight points and seven rebounds.
