Women's Tennis Claims Share of Sun Belt Regular-Season Title with Victory Over Georgia Southern

ATLANTA- The Georgia State women's tennis team secured a share of the Sun Belt Regular-Season Championship with a victory over in-state conference rival Georgia Southern for Senior Day on Friday. Senior Eva Chivu closed out her regular season tenure with GSU by clinching the match for the Panthers with a win, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at the top singles court position.

With the win, head coach Hannah Keeling and the Panthers move to 16-5 and tie the school record for regular season victories in a season. The win moves the team's current school record for SBC victories to nine.

Friday's win over the conference foe ensured a draw for the No. 1 overall seed in the SBC Conference Tournament as GSU finishes 9-1 in conference play for the spring. With a three-way tie for first place in the conference, GSU along with Sun Belt member institutions UT Arlington and South Alabama will meet for the drawing to determine seeding for the SBC championship.

Following the team's Senior Day ceremony recognizing Chivu and fellow teammate from Romania Andreea Stanescu, the Panthers entered doubles with a strong performance in a win playing for the early point. Angel Carney and Sofya Golubovskaya downed opponents at the top court, 7-5, and Chivu alongside partner Pragnya Kumar won, 6-2, at the third court.

Stanescu earned the Panthers an additional point with another dominant performance and a win, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 court position. The senior has now accounted for 12 wins with only two losses on the season at the second and third court positions.

Kumar posted a win at No. 5 singles to earn GSU a third point. The freshman finishes the regular season with a 7-1 record in singles play.

After dropping on court six, Chivu's clincher at the No. 1 spot for GSU earned the team its 16th victory as the Panthers claimed a share of the SBC title with the victory over Georgia Southern, 4-1.

GSU will compete at the SBC Tournament Championship at Peachtree City Tennis Center beginning Thursday, April 21 with the Panthers' seeding to be determined. The tournament in Peachtree City, Ga. will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live scoring provided by the conference.
