Panthers Defeat South Alabama, 4-1, to Claim 2022 Sun Belt Tournament Championship

Peachtree City, Ga.— The Georgia State men's tennis team claimed the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday with a victory, 4-1, against South Alabama at Peachtree City Tennis Center. Harvey Maughan clinched the match point at the fifth court position for the Panthers as No. 63 GSU earned its third SBC Championship Title.

Having faced South Alabama in the conference title match for five consecutive seasons, the Panthers entered Saturday looking to secure the SBC crown for the first time since 2017. GSU had seen defeat facing USA in each of its last three tournament championship appearances.

True to form, the Panthers secured the early point in doubles with All-Sun Belt First-Team pair Roberts Grinvalds and Andrei Duarte posting a win, 6-2, at the top court. Patrick Lazo and Diego Padilha clinched the win in doubles for GSU with the pair's seventh straight victory, 6-3, at court No. 3.

GSU has downed opponents in 19 of 24 doubles outings this season.

After dropping on court No. 1, Grinvalds secured the team's first singles point with a victory, 6-4, 6-4, at court position No. 2 putting GSU back ahead, 2-1. Lazo earned the team its third point with a win 6-3, 7-5, on court No. 3 as the Panthers took a 3-1 advantage in the title match.

With Maughan's victory in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, the senior secured the team its fourth point and clinched the SBC Title for GSU.

"It's an amazing feeling," head coach Jonathan Wolff said. "This is more than just a win— it's the experiences over the years and the culmination of all of that hard work. This is for the university that we play for. It was a total team effort. Our coaches, the players, the support staff, our fans that support and cheer us on— everyone at GSU deserves a piece of that trophy. I wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for them. Like they say, it's a Panther family and I love it here. I hope to make many more great memories with GSU."

With the 17th victory of the spring, GSU earns the Sun Belt Conference's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament selection show will air on Monday, May 2 at 6 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
