Jones Scores From 2B on Wild Pitch for Walk-Off Win over KSU

ATLANTA -- Cameron Jones scored from second base on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Georgia State a 6-5 walk-off win over Kennesaw State Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Luke Boynton and Josh Smith homered for the Panthers, who improved to 24-13 on the season with the win over the Owls (22-13), who rank in the Top 20 of the RPI.

Georgia State led 5-2 when Kennesaw State scored three runs in the eighth inning to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, KSU reliever Sam Pinson (3-2) retired the first two batters before Jones singled with two outs. After he moved to second on a wild pitch, Will Mize was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second.

With Dalton Pearson at the plate with a 1-2 count, Pinson threw another wild pitch, this one bouncing all the way to the first base dugout. Jones made a big turn at third but initially held up, but KSU catcher Nick Hassan's throw towards the plate was wide. As the third baseman scooped up the throw and flipped it to the plate, Jones raced home and slid safely under the tag for the winning run.

Jones (2-2) also earned the victory in relief after retiring the Owls in order in the top of the ninth. He started the game at first base before moving to the mound and went 3-for-5 on the night.

Kennesaw State struck first on Cash Young's solo homer in the top of the first, but Boynton answered immediately with a two-run homer in the bottom half. His 457-foot blast over the center field wall was his ninth homer of the season and gave GSU a 2-1 lead.

Smith followed with a solo homer, his fourth, to left field in the second for a 3-1 advantage.

Boynton led off the sixth with a single up the middle and scored on an RBI-single by Blaine Marchman. JoJo Jackson doubled and came home on a wild pitch to give the Panthers a 5-2 lead after six.

Georgia State continues its homestand by hosting Louisiana for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series that opens Friday at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
