Two More Homers for Ryerson as Panthers Rally for 8-5 Win, Complete Sweep

ATLANTA -- Max Ryerson hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and JoJo Jackson and Will Mize also homered as Georgia State rallied for a 9-5 win over South Alabama to complete a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Panthers (18-10, 7-2 Sun Belt) swept South Alabama (16-10, 4-5 Sun Belt), the conference's preseason favorite, for the first time since joining the league in 2014. Georgia State now sits in second place in the Sun Belt, one game behind first-place Texas State.

"What an amazing weekend of team baseball," head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "We won with hitting, we won with pitching and we won with defense. The bullpen was amazing all weekend, keeping us in games to allow the offense to bring us back."

With two homers today, Ryerson leads the Sun Belt with 12 on the season, including four this weekend.

The Panthers fell behind early and trailed 5-0 when Griffin Cheney and Cameron Jones led off the fourth inning with back-to-back singles. Jackson walked to load the bases with one out to bring up Ryerson, who blasted a grand slam to right center to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Two innings later, Ryerson led off the sixth with a single and scored the tying run on an RBI-single by Mize, knotting the game at 5-all after six.

After Jones drew a leadoff walk in the seventh, Jackson, the freshman from Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, hit his first career homer to give the Panthers a 7-5 lead.

The next batter was Ryerson, who smashed another homer over the center field wall for an 8-5 lead. Mize added a solo homer, his second of the season, in the eighth.

Once Ryerson's grand slam got the Panthers back in the game, GSU turned to a bullpen that was outstanding all weekend. In the fifth inning, Jones (1-1) moved from first base to the mound and pitched 4.1 scoreless innings to earn the victory. He allowed just one hit and struck out four before giving way to Ryan Watson with one out in the ninth. Watson retired the final two batters to pick up his second save of the weekend and fourth of the season.
