Panthers Down No. 68 UT Arlington to Claim School-Record Seventh Sun Belt Victory

ARLINGTON, Texas- Following the Panthers' 4-2 win over Texas State on Saturday, the Georgia State women's tennis team defeated conference foe No. 68 UT Arlington to earn its school-record seventh Sun Belt victory on Sunday. Nearing the record for most regular season victories in school history, the ranked win moves GSU to 14-5 on the season and 7-1 in SBC play.

GSU entered the match with a victory in doubles as the Panthers secured the early deuce point for a 1-0 advantage. Top doubles pair Sofya Golubovskaya and Angel Carney claimed the first court with a win, 7-6 (10-8).

After a loss on court No. 5 evened the score, 1-1, Andreea Stanescu posted a resounding win, 6-1, 6-0, on singles court No. 3 as GSU regained the lead, 2-1. The senior has accounted for the second-most wins on the Panthers' roster at 11.

UTA managed another point as the Panthers dropped in the No. 6 court position and UTA once again tied the match at 2-2. GSU responded by securing another point to take the lead, 3-2, as Golubovskaya claimed the No. 2 court, 7-5, 6-3.

Coming off Sun Belt Player of the Week honors, Eva Chivu continued to dominate at the top court position for the Panthers as the senior defeated her opponent on the first court in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The win clinched the match for GSU as the team secured the ranked victory over SBC opponent UTA and finished another perfect weekend at 2-0.

Carney went unfinished in the No. 4 position following the clinch and maintains her winning streak of 14 consecutive matches. 

With the weekend's back-to-back conference victories, the Panthers approach the school record for most regular season wins as well as most overall wins in a season. The records currently stand at 16 and 17 respectively. 

Next weekend will see GSU travel to Jonesboro, Ark. for its ninth conference outing facing Arkansas State on Saturday, April 9. The match will be played at A-State Tennis Complex at 11 a.m. ET.
