Tucker Scores 21 But Panthers Fall to Troy

ATLANTA -- Brenden Tucker scored 21 points but Georgia State fell to Troy 65-53 Thursday night at the GSU Convocation Center.

Tucker, the Atlanta native who transferred from the College of Charleston, hit two 3-pointers and went 7-for-7 at the free throw line as he topped the 20-point mark for the second time in the last three games after scoring 25 last week at ULM.

Ja'Heim Hudson added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Jamall Clyce came off the bench to grab a career-high nine rebounds, along with three points.

"We just didnt have our presence on a consistent basis tonight," head coach Jonas Hayes said. We had a stretch where we played good basketball, but it was not enough tonight. We've got to keep hammering away. We have to keep our head down, keep a work mindset. Things will turn around; we just have to stay consistent with our work ethic and how we approach each and every single day."

Trailing 30-27 at the intermission, Georgia State opened the second half with eight straight points by Tucker. He took a feed from Kaleb Scott for a layup and then hit back-to-back 3-pointers, both in transition, to give the Panthers a 35-30 lead less than two minutes into the second half.

Tucker hit a pair of free throws to put GSU ahead 44-38 with 13 minutes to play, but from there, the Panthers endured a stretch of 10 minutes without a field goal. That enabled Troy to go on a 17-1 run, taking a 55-45 lead with five minutes to play.

"We were not as careful with the ball as we should be," Hayes said. "They typically apply pressure, and I thought we lost our poise during that stretch. That led to us not getting get great shots at the bucket, and that cost us dearly."

Hudson finally broke the drought with a layup with 3:38 left, but the Panthers trailed 56-49.

A bucket by Tucker and a pair of free throws by Hudson pulled Georgia State within four at 57-53 at the 2:08 mark. Troy drew a foul on the other end and made the first throw but missed the second and GSU grabbed the rebound down five with 1:56 to play, but the Panthers turned the ball over in the backcourt. From there, Troy was able to hold off the Panthers for the win.

Georgia State continues its homestand by hosting Coastal Carolina Saturday at 2 p.m. at the GSU Convocation Center. For tickets, visit GeorgiaStateSports.com/tix or call 404-413-4020 during business hours.
