LITTLE ROCK -- Toneari Lane scored a career-high 23 points for the second straight game and Jay'Den Turner contributed 16 points and eight rebounds as Georgia State rallied from 17 points down with 14 minutes to play for a 93-90 overtime win at Little Rock Wednesday at the Jack Stephens Center.
Â
The Panthers (3-2) defeated Little Rock (1-4) for the second straight game following Sunday's 88-77 win in a rare non-conference home-and-home, and Georgia State again had five players in double figures as Lucas Taylor scored 13, Brenden Tucker 11 and Dwon Odom 10 today.
Â
Georgia State's second-half comeback was its largest since the Panthers overcame a 22-point second-half deficit to win at Alabama in 2018-19.
Â
"We grew up a lot today," head coach Jonas Hayes said. " To win a game on the road that required overcoming adversity with a lot of toughness and determination ... we really grew up as a team.
Â
"Just a total team effort. Multiple guys stepped up and were ready when their number was called, and I couldn't be more proud of this team."
Â
Tucker went 9-for-10 from the foul line, including two free throws with 15 seconds in regulation to tie the game at 83, and then Turner took over in the overtime, scoring six of the GSU's nine points.
Â
After Little Rock scored the first two points of the extra session on a pair of free throws, Turner nailed a 3-pointer to give Georgia State its first lead since it led 25-24 with seven minutes left in the first half. At the other end he grabbed a steal and converted the layup for an 88-85 lead with 2:43 to play, and then he drew a charge.
Â
Lane made three free throws in the final minute to give GSU a 92-88 lead with 11 seconds left. After Little Rock cut the lead in half with a pair of free throws, Brenden Tucker made one with four seconds to play, and Little Rock's final 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark.
Â
"How about Jay'Den Turner absolutely turning the game around?" Hayes said. "His tail is all over the whole court."
Â
After leading 23-15 early, Georgia State trailed 45-37 at the half and continued to struggle in the opening minutes of the second half, falling behind 61-44 with 14:22 to play. That's when Lane started the Panthers' comeback by scoring nine straight points on back-to-back treys and then three free throws to cut the deficit to 63-53 at 11:48. Four points by Odom around a bucket by Taylor made it 66-61 with 7:24 left.
Â
After the media timeout, Odom and Lane hit two free throws each to pull Georgia State within one at 66-65 with 6:48 left.
Â
The free throw parade continued with two by Taylor and two by Tucker for a 71-71 tie with 5:27 to play. The Panthers went 22-for-22 from the free throw line in the second half and 29-for-34 for the game.
Â
After a GSU foul and then a technical foul, Little Rock hit four straight free throws to take an 83-79 lead with 1:15 left. But Turner made two foul shots, and then Tucker was fouled on a defensive rebound to set up his tying free throws with 15 seconds left.
