Three Panthers Hit Doube Digits in GSU 65-60 Loss Against Winthrop

ROCK HILL, SC -- The Panthers hit double digits against Winthrop, but ultimately fell 60-65 on the road on Thursday night.

The Georgia State women's basketball team took a 51-47 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 65-60 to the Winthrop Eagles on the road Thursday.

The Panthers (4-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Mikyla Tolivert, who had 12 points and three steals. Deasia Merrill tacked on 11 points and two blocks off of the bench and Crystal Henderson helped out with 10 points.

The Georgia State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring in eight threes on 21 attempts. Henderson was the most prolific shooter for the Panthers, draining two treys in the contest.

The Georgia State defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 24 Winthrop turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 33 points on the other end of the floor. Tolivert's three steals led the way individually for the Panthers.


How It Happened

Georgia State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 23-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Winthrop kept adding to that lead, building a 30-23 advantage before Georgia State went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three from Kaleigh Addie, to take a 31-30 lead. The Eagles then battled back to even it up at 33-33 heading into halftime. Georgia State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 15 points.

After intermission, Winthrop snatched a 47-43 lead before Georgia State answered back by going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Merrill, to grab a 51-47 lead with 24 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Georgia State took advantage of six Winthrop turnovers in the quarter, scoring 11 points off of takeaways.

Winthrop proceeded to take a 57-55 lead before Georgia State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Henderson's three, to seize a 60-57 lead with 1:59 to go in the contest. Winthrop re-asserted control, outscoring the Panthers 8-0 the rest of the way to hand Georgia State the 65-60 loss. Georgia State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.
