Panthers Drop Pair of Matches on the Road in Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.— Georgia State men's tennis wrapped dual match competition on the road in Florida this weekend with a pair of losses facing Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida. Freshman Diogo Morais saw strong wins in both singles and doubles play over the weekend, however the effort would not be enough as the Panthers dropped to 1-5 overall for the spring with the losses.

GSU traveled to Fort Myers, Florida on Friday for a matchup with Florida Gulf Coast. The Panthers dropped in doubles play to open the match and fell behind early, 0-1.

Despite Morais claiming the fourth singles court position to earn a team point for the Panthers, GSU dropped at singles positions No. 5, No. 3 and No. 2 and FGCU clinched the match. The teams played out competition and the Panthers saw defeat at singles courts No. 6 and No. 1 before ending the match with a 6-1 final count in FGCU's favor.

GSU returned to action on Sunday traveling to Jacksonville for an outing against North Florida.

Morais once again posted a strong outing in doubles partnering with Roberts Grinvalds at the top court as the pair downed opponents from UNF, 6-2. After GSU dropped at the third doubles court, Edward Tymes and Gabriele Datei battled at the second court for the early point in the match.

The duo played to a 7-point tiebreak set before ultimately coming up short in the tightly contested matchup on court two. 0-1 down for the match entering singles, GSU fell at court positions No. 4, No. 1 and No. 2 and UNF clinched match point.

The teams played out the match to a 7-0 final score in UNF's favor.

The Panthers will be on the road again next week for a pair of matches in North Carolina, beginning with an outing against Elon on Saturday, Feb. 18. The match will be contested at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 2 p.m. ET.

GSU then travels to Wilmington on Sunday, Feb. 19 to face UNCW at noon ET. Information regarding live stats for both matches will be announced via the team's social and on the web later in the week.
