MIAMI – Georgia State dropped both games of their doubleheader 4-3 against host FIU and 11-3 in six innings against #10 Clemson in the second day of the Felsburg Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Bailee Richardson went 3-for-6 with one RBI and
Emily Brown went 3-for-7 to lead Georgia State's offense.
Jaycee Goodwin went 2-for-5 to continue her strong start this season. The sophomore from Paris, Ky. is batting .625 with two RBI's in three games.
Carolyn Deady led GSU in Game Two with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate and two RBI's.
Game One: FIU 4, GSU 3
Down 1-0,
Bailee Richardson led off the top of the second with a double to right center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Then with two outs,
Jackie Gonzalez walked and was tagged out in a rundown on a double-steal attempt that allowed Richardson to score and even the game 1-1.
FIU responded with a run on a double in the home half of the inning to make it 2-1.
The score remained that way until the fifth as
Carolyn Deady reached on a throwing error to lead off the inning.
Maya Montague then came on to pinch run for her and promptly advanced to third on an errant throw and a groundout before sliding home on a fielder's choice by
Maia Mumpfield to even the score.
Chloe Middlebrooks then legged out a bunt single to advance Mumpfield to second.
Emma Yanes then pinch ran for Mumpfield, and after a popout by
Emily Brown, scored on a single to third base by
Ashton Schroyer to put the Panthers up 3-2 for their first lead of the season. But FIU responded again in the home half, capitalizing on two GSU errors to score two runs on just one hit and take a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.
Georgia State had one last chance in the seventh as Mumpfield recorded her first collegiate hit and advanced to second on a two-out infield single by
Emily Brown, but Schroyer then flied out to left field to end the rally.
GSU starter
Hallie Adams (0-2) pitched all six innings and recorded four strikeouts.
Game Two: #10 Clemson 11, GSU 3 (Six Innings)
Georgia State (0-4) jumped out front quickly in the first inning as
Emily Brown hit a leadoff single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a two-out single by
Bailee Richardson to put the Panthers up 1-0.
Clemson threatened in the home half of the inning, putting runners on second and third with one out. But GSU starter
Emily Hodnett (0-2) then made a gritty play on a wild pitch, hustling to home plate to catch the relay throw from the catcher, and then applied the tag at home plate to keep the run off the board. Her glove-hand was stepped on by the sliding baserunner in the process, but she was able to remain in the game and promptly induced a flyout to right field for the third out to end the threat.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Clemson scored two runs in the second and three runs in the third and fourth innings to take an 8-1 lead.
The Panthers rallied in the sixth inning as
Jaycee Goodwin delivered a one-out single to right field and advanced to third on a double by
Bailee Richardson. Then after a line-out by
Chloe Nadler,
Carolyn Deady drove Goodwin and Richardson home with a base-hit to cut the deficit to five. But Clemson responded with three runs in the home-half on a bases-loaded, base clearing double to end the game.
Georgia State will face Kansas City in their final game at the Felsburg Invitational on Sunday at 10 a.m.
