Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Panthers Fall to Samford, UAB on the Road

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— Georgia State women's tennis traveled on the road for a pair of dual matches in Birmingham, Alabama this weekend visiting Samford and UAB. Despite strong performances and wins by Eva Chivu, Michelle Ncube and Maria Paredes over the weekend, the Panthers entered competition shorthanded for a fourth consecutive week and saw defeat in each match.

Competing one player short of a full lineup, the Panthers have been forced to default at the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles court positions in every outing since beginning the spring. GSU entered Saturday once again short of a full roster as the team spotted Samford a point and began the match down, 0-1.

GSU posted a strong doubles performance to open the match and collected victories at the first and second court positions. Ncube and Paredes partnered at the top court for a 7-5 victory, while Chivu played alongside teammate Pragnya Kumar at the second court, earning a one-sided 6-3 victory.

The win in doubles earned GSU a team point and tied the match, 1-1.

Ncube and Paredes each followed up the doubles victory by posting strong individual performances in singles. Ncube downed her opponent at the second court in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, while Paredes posted a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 three-set victory at court three.

Even as each player secured the second and third positions, the Panthers ultimately came up short at singles courts No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 and GSU was defeated, 4-3.

The team returned to play in Birmingham on Sunday battling UAB. The Panthers dropped at doubles court two and fell behind, 0-2, moving into singles competition.

Chivu posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the top singles court earning the team a point, however a loss by forfeit at court five and a defeat at court four would give UAB the match point. Playing a clinch-clinch format, the match ended and GSU fell short of a win, 4-1.

GSU returns to play next weekend and will travel to face Western Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 18. Match time is set for 11 a.m. ET with information on live stats and streaming to follow.

The Panthers will return home on Sunday, Feb. 19 and host Gonzaga at 10 a.m. ET. The match will be contested at the GSU Clarkston Courts with live stats available to fans.

More information will be announced later in the week via the team's social media and on the web. Follow Georgia State women's tennis on Twitter (@GSUWTennis) and Instagram (@GSUWomensTennis) for news and updates throughout the 2023 season.
