Yanes Homers in Extra Inning Victory Over the Mastodons

ATLANTA- Georgia State (4-7) defeated the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons for the second time this weekend in extra innings, 7-6.

It was a slow start for the Panthers going into the bottom of the third, down 4-0, as Bailee Richardson clobbered the ball with bases loaded for a three-run triple to get the Panthers on the board. Richardson went 2 for 4 on the day with a stolen base and brought in three runs.

The Mastadons answered with a homerun in the fourth to extend their lead by two and held onto it until the bottom of the fifith when Panthers got things going with a rbi double by Jaycee Goodwin and a rbi single by Richardson to tie up the game. Goodwin, in as a designated player, was two for three on the day, brought in two runs and crossed home twice.

Georgia State defense went to work with a diving catch in the outfield by Emily Brown and put a runner in a pickle to end the 5th inning. They shut down the Mastadons in the sixth with a double play.

Emma Yanes entered the game to pinch hit and blasted her first career homerun in the sixth to put the Panthers in the lead, up by one. The game went into extra innings after a double by the Mastodons tied up the game.

It was an international tie breaker situation, runner starting at second giving both teams an advantage the Mastodons couldn't capitalize on.

With two outs and a runner at third, for the second time this weekend, Jackie Gonzalez brought in the winning run as she laid down the perfect bunt to the pitcher for Chloe Nadler to make it home for a Panther victory.

Emily Hodnett pitched a complete game and improved to 3-4 on the season.

The Panthers take on California Baptist at the Bob Heck Softball Complex Thursday, February 23 at 5 p.m.
