Panthers Come Up Short in Senior Day Battle Versus Georgia Southern

ATLANTA— Georgia State women's basketball hosted Sun Belt Conference rival Georgia Southern for Senior Day on Friday in a high-energy battle that saw the Panthers come up short of victory, 67-61. Despite Deasia Merrill, Nyla Jean and Alyssa Phillip all posting doubt-digit point totals for the Panthers, GSU closes the regular season with the loss charting an 11-20 record entering the postseason.

The Panthers' final game in Atlanta for 2023 saw a competitive first period as Jean connected on a pair of three-pointers and led the team with eight points. GSU hit a total of four three-pointers as a team and entered the second period down by a narrow seven-point margin.

The second period saw Merrill lead the Panthers in scoring with seven points and GSU reached halftime down nine.

GSU battled back in the second half cutting the Georgia Southern lead to just two points with 2:05 remaining in the third period. Mya Byrd accounted for five points in the third after hitting from three and connecting on a jumper in the paint.

The Panthers continued to press in the fourth. Merrill ended the game leading GSU statistically with 16 points, 9 rebounds and four assists. Jean charted 15 points to go with three rebounds and two steals.

Phillip ended the game posting a double-double as the sophomore notched 10 points and 11 rebounds. Mikayla Tolivert led the Panthers in assists with seven.

The Panthers fought to narrow the Georgia Southern lead to just four with 26 seconds remaining, but were unable to match the Eagles' point total as time expired and GSU was defeated, 67-61.

The team's Senior Day ceremony was held following the game as GSU honored its senior players.

The Panthers will enter the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Championship as the No. 12 seed in the tournament. GSU is slated to face No. 13-seeded South Alabama on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 12:30 p.m. ET.

The conference tournament will be held at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Fla. from Feb. 28-March 6. For continued updates and coverage leading up to the SBC Championship, follow Georgia State women's basketball on social media (@gsu_wbb).
