Panthers Fall to Mercer in Home Opener

ATLANTA— Opening home play for the spring 2023 season, Georgia State women's tennis fell to Mercer, 5-2, on Saturday. The Panthers once again entered the match in Atlanta playing shorthanded as GSU was forced to default at the third doubles court and the No. 6 singles court.

GSU opened doubles play posting a competitive outing at each of the top-two courts. Michelle Ncube and Maria Paredes partnered at the top court and fell in a narrow 7-5 decision, while Eva Chivu and Pragnya Kumar dropped at the second doubles court, 6-2.

With the loss by default at No. 6 singles earning Mercer an early lead entering the match, the Panthers fell behind further with the doubles loss and entered singles 2-0, down.

Fifth-year Chivu made quick work of her opponent at the top singles court with a strong win, 6-3, 6-3, earning GSU its first point of the match. Despite an additional win by Paredes at the No. 3 singles position, Mercer clinched the match with just two singles wins at the fourth and fifth court positions.

Playing out the match, the win by Paredes earned GSU a second point. Ncube dropped a tightly contested three-set battle at the second position and the match ended by a final count of 5-2.

GSU returns to play next Saturday, Feb. 11 traveling to Birmingham, Ala. for a match against Samford. Match time is TBA with information regarding live stats and streaming to be announced later in the week on the team's social media and on the web.
