Men's Tennis Drops Pair of Road Matches in Virginia

NORFOLK, Va.— Georgia State men's tennis (3-13) fell in a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches on the road in Virginia this weekend. The Panthers visited James Madison in Harrisonburg on Friday and saw defeat, 4-3, then traveled to Norfolk for an outing against No. 71 Old Dominion on Saturday and dropped the match, 6-1.

GSU entered Friday's match facing JMU and fell short of securing the early doubles point with narrow 6-4 losses at the second and third courts. Roberts Grinvalds and Diego Padilha partnered at the top doubles court and ended the match unfinished with an even 5-5 count.

Singles play saw competitive outings for the Panthers at every court. After dropping at the top court, GSU evened the match with wins by Diogo Morais and Gabriele Datei at the second and third courts.

Morais secured the third court with a strong win in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6, while Datei posted a three-set victory at the second court to tie the match at 2-2. GSU fell at singles court five, then once again evened the count at 3-3 as Padilha charted a win at No. 4 singles in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

With the match to be decided at No. 6 singles, Ricardo Batista played to a third set with a chance to clinch. The freshman ultimately came up short in the three-set battle as the Panthers dropped the sixth court and fell in the match, 4-3.

GSU returned to action on Saturday for a ranked match against SBC newcomer No. 71 ODU. GSU fell short in doubles to open the match, then entered singles competition and dropped courts five, one and two as ODU clinched the match.

Playing out competition, Morais charted a second singles victory on the weekend with a three-set win at the third court for the Panthers. The win at No. 3 singles earned GSU a point in the match before the team dropped at courts four and six and were defeated by ODU, 6-1.

GSU returns to action next weekend with outings facing Charlotte and SBC foe Coastal Carolina.

The Panthers will travel to face Charlotte on Saturday, April 1 with match time slated for 1 p.m. ET. The team returns to Atlanta the following day and hosts Coastal Carolina at the GSU Clarkston Courts at 10 a.m. ET.

More information regarding the team's matches on April 1-2 will be announced later in the week. Follow Georgia State men's tennis on social media (@GSUMTennis) for continued updates and coverage of the Panthers' 2023 campaign.
