Panthers Tie Season HR Record in 9-7 Win at Georgia

Boynton Hit 2 HR, Mize Homered and Drove in 4

ATHENS -- Luke Boynton hit two home runs and Will Mize homered and drove in four runs as Georgia State knocked off Georgia 9-7 Tuesday at Foley Field for the Panthers' first win over the Bulldogs since 2014.

With the Panthers' 12-11 win over Georgia Tech on March 28, GSU has defeated the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets in the same season for the first time since 2000.

The three homers raised Georgia State's season total to 82, tying the Panthers' season record, originally set in 2010.

"It's a huge win for us because it was a complete team win," head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "To beat Georgia and Georgia Tech in the same season for the time since 2000, that's something special. It points the arrow in the direction that we're heading."

Boynton, the junior first baseman, quickly put Georgia State (21-21) in front in the first inning with a 2-run homer over the scoreboard in right field. Then Mize led off the second with a solo shot to center, and the Panthers led 3-0.

Georgia (23-18) got solo homers from Parks Harber and Cole Wagner in the second. After the Bulldogs tied the game in the third, Boynton answered immediately, leading off the fourth inning with his 13th homer of the season and No. 25 of his career to give the Panthers the lead for good.

GSU added three runs in the fifth on a wild pitch and a 2-run single by Mize to lead 7-3.

In the seventh, Matt Ruiz tripled past the diving center fielder to score Max Ryerson, who walked. Then Mize delivered again with his fourth RBI of the day on a single through the right side, putting GSU up 9-5.

The Panthers took a 9-7 lead into the ninth inning and turned to freshman closer Brady Jones. After he walked the first two batters, Georgia sacrificed the runners to second and third. Then Jones got leadoff hitter Ben Anderson to fly out to shallow center before ending the game with a strikeout of Georgia's top hitter, Charlie Condon, to earn his third save.

"That's the first time Brady Jones has had an opportunity to pitch in a situation like that," said Stromdahl, who made a mound visit after the two walks. "We support him, that's all we said on the mound. He got composed and got the job done."

Georgia State returns home to host Marshall next weekend, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
