Ryerson Grand Slam Punctuates Sweep of Georgia Southern

ATLANTA -- Cameron Jones had two hits, tied the Georgia State stolen base record and then pitched the Panthers to a 16-5 (8) win over Georgia Southern to complete a three-game sweep at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Max Ryerson put an exclamation point on the weekend with a game-ending grand slam to invoke the run rule in the eighth inning and give Georgia State (27-26, 14-13 Sun Belt) its first three-game sweep of the Eagles.

Jones, the fourth-year junior from Kathleen, Ga., started the game in right field and went 2-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored. In the fourth inning, he swiped third base for his 34th stolen base of the season, tying the Georgia State season record set by Jimmy Fowlkes in 1980.

The two-way standout then pitched the final 3.1 innings of the game, allowing one run on one hit with four strikeouts to earn the victory.

The Georgia State staff held the Eagles (24-27, 14-13) to just two hits on the day, although the Eagles managed four runs in the fifth inning on just one hit due to walks and wild pitches.

Georgia State starter Camren Landry held the Eagles hitless for 4.1 innings before Blake Evans singled with one out in the top of the fifth. Landry then walked the next two batter to give way to the bullpen.

The Panthers jumped in front with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Luke Boynton's sacrifice fly plated the first run, JoJo Jackson singled home another and then Ryerson scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead after three.

Catcher Colin Hynek led off the fourth inning with a solo homer, his 10th of the season and No. 100 of 2023 for the Panthers. Then Jones walked, moved to second on a balk, stole third and scored on Will Mize's RBI-single to put the Panthers up 5-0 after four.

After Georgia Southern pulled within 5-4 in the top of the fifth, the Panthers answered with a run in the bottom half as Matt Ruiz led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dalton Pearson.

Georgia State blew the game open with six runs in the sixth. With runners at second and third and one out, Ruiz delivered a 2-run single to score Ryerson, who walked, and Luke Boynton, who doubled. JoJo Jackson singled, and after Ruiz and Jackson stole second and third, Jesse Donohoe bounced a single up the middle to score both runners. Two batters later, Pearson hit his fourth homer of the season to left field for his third RBI of the day and fifth of the series to make it 12-4.

The Panthers led 12-5 in the bottom of the eighth when Ryerson came to the plate with bases load and smashed the 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for his team-leading 17th homer of the season and Georgia State's sixth grand slam of 2023. Ryerson now has 39 homers in his two seasons for the Panthers, giving him sole possession of fourth place in Georgia State history.

Georgia State pounded out 17 hits on the day, including three each for Jackson, Boynton and Pearson.

"We had a really good weekend," head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "A lot of good things happened because our guys did exactly what they needed to.

"We just really talk about quality at-bats. We're a very potent offense, so hopefully we can continue this next weekend and have a chance to do the same thing in Montgomery."

The Panthers conclude the regular season next weekend at Old Dominion, needing one win to secure a spot in the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The ODU series opens Thursday in Norfolk, Va.
