Panthers Rally to Tie Game in 7th But Fall in 12

MONTGOMERY -- Georgia State rallied from a 5-1 deficit, tying the game on Luke Boynton's 2-run single in the seventh inning, but the Panthers fell to Texas State 6-5 on a walk-off homer in the 12th inning in an elimination game at the Guardian Credit Union Sun Belt Conference Championship at Riverwalk Stadium.

Georgia State ends its season at 30-29, earning their third winning season in four years under head coach Brad Stromdahl, including back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time since Stromdahl was a GSU assistant coach from 2008-11.

Max Ryerson drove in three runs for the Panthers, including his 20th homer of the season with a solo shot in the first inning. That gives him 42 homers in his two seasons in a Georgia State uniform, tying him for second place in school history, three behind the GSU career record of 45.

Ryerson's homer put the Panthers up 1-0 in the top of the first, but Texas State scored four unearned runs in the bottom half to chase GSU starter Camren Landry and take a 4-1 lead. The Bobcats added one more in the second to lead 5-1.

From there the GSU bullpen kept the Panthers in the game as Aidan McAllister (2.1 innings), Brady Jones (3.0 innings) and Cameron Jones (4.0 innings) combined to pitch 9.1 scoreless innings through the 11th.

Ryerson, who was 4-for-5 on the day, had an RBI-single in the fifth to pull GSU within 5-2.

Jesse Donohoe led off the seventh with a single, and with two outs, Ryerson singled to left field to score pinch runner Taylor Shultz to cut the deficit to 5-2. After Will Mize reached on a two-base error by the right fielder to put runners at second and third, Boynton ripped a single to center field and tie the game at 5-all.

Cameron Jones, the three-time, first-team All-Sun Belt utility player, moved from right field to the mound to start the eighth inning and pitched four scoreless frames with three strikeouts.

With the score still tied in the 12th, the Panthers turned to fifth-year senior Ryan Watson, who struck out a career-high 13 in 6.2 innings Tuesday's win over Georgia Southern. Watson retired the first batter, but then Texas State first baseman Daylan Pena homered with one out for the walk-off win.

"We competed until the end, and that's what matters most," head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "Disappointed in the result for sure, but really, really happy for the progress our program has made. We're going to live and dwell on these last two losses for a while, but the future is very bright. I love our guys and I love the way we grind."
