Panthers Drop 3-2 Match to Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, SC --The Georgia State volleyball team fell to the Coastal Carolina Lady Chanticleers in five sets (17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 6-15) Saturday on the road at The HTC Center.

The loss dropped Georgia State's record to 10-8 overall and 1-5 in Sun Belt action.

The Panthers offense was paced by Akira Burt, who finished with 12 kills on the day. Keionna MacKey added 11 and Alessia Cappai chipped in with 10 as part of balanced Georgia State attack. Defensively, had three players reach double figures in digs, including Kaleigh Fitzgerald's 24, 13 from Patrycja Zielinska, and 10 more from Shanelle Martinez. From the front row, Kayla Broom contributed nine blocks.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Panthers found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set 25-17. Georgia State trailed by as many as eight points as Coastal Carolina grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that was tied up five times before the Lady Chanticleers took control.

SET 2 | Georgia State tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 victory in set two. The Panthers never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 20-19 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Panthers took over in the second half of the stanza. The Panthers racked up 18 kills over the course of the set. Georgia State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Coastal Carolina attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Georgia State grabbed another win in set three to make it a 2-1 match. The Panthers the set the third set 25-22. Georgia State took the lead for good at 21-20after fighting back from a one-point deficit, the Lady Chanticleers largest lead of the set. This came in a set that featured 13 ties and eight lead changes. The Georgia State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 4 | Georgia State couldn't keep the win streak alive, as the Lady Chanticleers forced a fifth set with a 25-22 fourth-set win. The Panthers fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set.

SET 5 | Georgia State opened a lead of two sets to one before losing the final two sets, including a 15-6 loss in the fifth set. The Panthers dropped the first point and never clawed back into the lead.

Georgia State is back at home on Friday Oct. 18 at 6:00 p.m. to take on Old Dominion.
