HUNTINGTON, WV --The Georgia State women's basketball team got a 27-point showing from the bench, but fell 97-69 to the Marshall Thundering Herd on the road Tuesday.
The Panthers (15-13, 9-8) had two players score in double figures, led by Mya Williams, who had 17 points. Mikyla Tolivert added 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Crystal Henderson added nine points, eight assists and two steals.
Led by Henderson's two offensive rebounds, Georgia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
How It Happened
Georgia State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-19 at the end of the first quarter.
Georgia State kept the Thundering Herd from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Henderson, to narrow its deficit to 34-32. Marshall responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Panthers trailing 47-37 heading into halftime.
Marshall continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 51-37 advantage before Georgia State went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 51-43 with 8:13 to go in the third. Marshall countered and stretched its lead to 74-55 heading into the fourth. Georgia State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.
Marshall kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 83-57 advantage before Georgia State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Patience Williams' layup, to shrink the deficit to 83-63 with 5:42 to go in the contest. Marshall responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 97-69. Georgia State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.
