Georgia State falls to Appalachian State 10-9 in 8 innings

ATLANTA, GA --The Georgia State Panthers fell 10-9 in an eight-inning matchup to the Appalachian State Mountaineers Sunday.

Junior Sydney Boulware (4-9) took the loss in the circle for Georgia State (8-18, ). Junior Kate Kastelic was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning while allowing one hit.

In the batter's box, the Panthers were paced by junior Chloe Middlebrooks, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and five RBI. Freshman McKenzie Walker compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Senior Kiki Edwards also helped out for Georgia State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 5-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Georgia State's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Middlebrooks.

The Mountaineers broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the fifth inning, when the Panthers got back on the scoreboard. Senior Carolyn Deady came across to score the lone run of the inning for Georgia State, which brought the score level at 6-6.

Appalachian State broke that tie and took an 8-6 lead moving into the sixth, when Georgia State grabbed the advantage at 9-8. The Panthers scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer from Middlebrooks that scored freshman Payton Nicholson and Walker. The Panthers were unable to hold the lead, as Appalachian State scored two times over the remaining two innings to grab the 10-9 win.
