ATLANTA -- Georgia State fell 11-7 to Appalachian State in their series opener Friday night at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Every GSU (21-21, 10-9 Sun Belt) starter reached base, and Will Mize hit his team-leading 10th homer of the season.
After App State (24-14-1, 9-9-1 Sun Belt) struck first with three runs in the third inning, the Panthers answered on Michael Maginnis' RBI-double to trail 3-1 after three. But the Mountaineers added four runs in the fourth, including Banks Tolley's Sun Belt-leading 18th homer of the season, to move ahead 7-1.
Mize's homer in fifth inning, No. 27 of his career, pulled the Panthers within 7-3, but App State pulled away with three runs in the sixth.
The Panthers mounted a late rally, scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but came up short.
Kameron Douglas (0-2) started and took the loss for Georgia State. Making his first career start, the sophomore right-hander went three innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.
The series continues with a 3 p.m. game Saturday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex.
