ATLANTA, GA -- Georgia State's late rally came up short as the Panthers fell to Appalachian State 13-9 in Sunday's series finale at the GSU Baseball Complex.
JoJo Jackson hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season, and Georgia State (21-23, 10-11 Sun Belt) tied the school record by turning five double plays, but App State (26-14-1, 11-9-1) swept the three-game series.
The Mountaineers jumped in front quickly with seven runs in the top of the first inning, but Georgia State chipped away, pulling within 7-5 on Matt Ruiz's RBI-single in the third inning.
App State had another big inning with five runs in the fourth, including a grand slam by Xavier Moronta, to pull ahead 12-5.
Jackson led off the fifth with his solo homer, and then the Panthers closed the gap with three more in the sixth, including RBI-singles by Jackson and Dylan Strickland to pull within 12-9. But GSU left the bases loaded and could get no closer.
Every GSUÂ starter reached base safely as the Panthers collected nine hits and 12 walks but left 11 on base.
Jackson 2-for-4 on the day, adding an RBI-single to his solo homer for two RBI, and Strickland also drove in two runs.
The Panthers return to action with Tuesday, hosting Jacksonville State at 12 noon at the GSU Baseball Complex before heading on the road for eight straight games.
