Jackson HR Lifts GSU to 10-9 Win at Coastal Carolina

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CONWAY, S.C. -- JoJo Jackson hit the go-ahead home run to send Georgia State to a 10-9 win over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader at Springs Brooks Stadium. Jackson also homered in the nightcap, but the Chanticleers (30-21, 13-14) rallied for a 17-7 victory to win the series, two games to one.

Georgia State (24-28, 12-15) hit seven homers in the doubleheader and 13 on the weekend, a program record for home runs in a 3-game Sun Belt Conference series. The Panthers lead the Sun Belt with 96 homers, the second-best season total in GSU annals, bettered only by last year's record of 110.

Will Mize homered in Game 1 and collected five hits on the day to extend his hitting streak to 21 games, one shy of the Georgia State record of 22, set by Bradley Logan in 2008.

GAME 1 | Georgia State 10, Coastal Carolina 9

JoJo Jackson led off the ninth inning with the go-ahead home run and reliever Aidan McEvoy slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth to give Georgia State a 10-9 win over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader.

Will Mize hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth, and Michael Maginnis and Colin Hynek also went deep for the Panthers.

McEvoy (3-1), the senior left-hander, finished the game with 3.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing no walks and striking out five, a career high, to earn the victory. After Georgia State (24-27, 12-14) took the lead in the ninth, he retired the Chanticleers in order, including two strikeouts.

Georgia State jumped in front with two runs in the first inning on Mize's RBI-double and a sacrifice fly by Matt Ruiz. Maginnis' 2-run homer, his 11th of the season, extended the lead to 4-1 in the third, and then Hynek's 2-run shot put the Panthers up 6-2 in the fifth inning.

After Coastal Carolina scored six runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to move ahead 8-7, Ryan Dyal delivered a pinch hit, RBI-single to score Jackson, who doubled, and tie the game at 8-all.

In the eighth inning, Mize hit his team-leading 16th homer to give GSU a 9-8 lead, but Coastal answered in the bottom half on an RBI-single by Derek Bender, setting up Jackson's decisive homer in the ninth.

Sophomore right-hander Brian Garmon II entered the game in the first inning and struck out a career-high eight in 3.2 innings, equaling his career-long outing.

GAME 2 | Coastal Carolina 17, Georgia State 7

JoJo Jackson homered for the third straight game and Maximus Martin and Jesse Donohoe also hit home runs but Georgia State fell to Coastal Carolina 17-7 in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader.

Martin, the sophomore shortstop, hit his first homer of the season with a 2-run shot in the second inning for the game's first runs. Jackson hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, his 13th of the season, and then Donohoe added a solo homer in the fifth to give the Panthers a 4-3 lead.

Will Mize led off the top of the sixth inning with a single to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. Will Maginnis followed with a single, and then Jackson's ground rule double down the left field line brought home Mize. Georgia State extended the lead to  7-3 on a RBI-groundout by Matt Ruiz and a run-scoring single by Brennan Hudson.

But Coastal Carolina exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-7 lead. Then Derek Bender hit a 3-run homer in the seventh inning and then a 2-run shot in the eighth to invoke the 10-run rule and end the game.
