MacKey, Cappai Record Double-Doubles in Panthers Win Over Florida A&M

ATLANTA, GA --Keionna MacKey and Alessia Cappai both recorded double-doubles to help propel the Georgia State volleyball team to a 3-1 win (30-28, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24) against the Florida A&M Rattlerettes Saturday at home at GSU Sports Arena.

The out-of-conference win improved the Panthers' overall record to 1-2 on the season.

The Panthers were led by double-doubles from both Cappai, who had 15 kills and 13 digs, and MacKey, who had 23 kills and 13 digs. Akira Burt also added 15 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Kaleigh Fitzgerald chipped in for with 14 digs to go with four blocks from Kayla Broom.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Panthers survived a back-and-forth first set to win 30-28 in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied 17 times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match. The Panthers opening set win came in a stanza where 20 of their 30 points came via the kill.

SET 2 | Georgia State then fell in the second set 25-21, tying the match at a set apiece. The Panthers lost the second set despite a solid performance on the attacking end. Georgia State put together a .407 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set loss.

SET 3 | Georgia State fired back following the second-set loss to grab the third set and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Panthers took the set 25-20 propelled by a strong performance on the attacking side. Georgia State registered a .303 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set win. The Panthers ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.

SET 4 | Georgia State kept the momentum going, claiming the match win with a 26-24 fourth-set victory. The Panthers came out on top of a tight battle, winning in a stanza that was tied 12 times and had seven lead changes. The Panthers win came in a stanza where 19 of their 26 points came via the kill. Georgia State also supplemented their offense with three aces in the set.

The Panthers will face Morgan State next at the West Georgia Tournament. The match will take place Friday September 6 at 2:00 p.m.
