HUNTINGTON, WV --The Georgia State men's basketball team shot 50 percent from deep on the way to an 85-81 win over the Marshall Thundering Herd on the road Thursday.
The Panthers (8-14, 4-6) had five players score in double figures, led by Cesare Edwards, who had 27 points, four assists and three blocks. Nick McMullen tacked on 14 points and eight rebounds and Toneari Lane helped out with 14 points.
The Georgia State offense was very productive from downtown, making nine threes on 18 attempts. Lane was the most prolific shooter for the Panthers, draining two treys in the contest.
Georgia State forced 13 Marshall turnovers. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jelani Hamilton's four steals led the way for Georgia State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 26-20, Georgia State went on a 12-0 run with 10:39 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Malachi Brown, to take a 32-26 lead. The Panthers then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 51-37 advantage. Georgia State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 28 of its 51 points close to the basket.
Georgia State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Edwards' three, to grow the lead to 64-44 with 15:21 to go in the contest. The Thundering Herd narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still held on for the 85-81 win. Georgia State capitalized on seven Marshall turnovers in the period, collecting 10 points off those turnovers.
