STATESBORO, GA --The Georgia State men's basketball team got a 29-point showing from the bench, but fell 90-67 to the Georgia Southern Eagles on the road Thursday.
The Panthers had two players score in double figures, led by Jelani Hamilton, who had 19 points and six rebounds. Ayouba Berthe tacked on 16 points off the bench and Jakai Newton added nine points.
Hamilton pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead the Georgia State offense which grabbed 11 boards and turned them into eight second chance points.
The Georgia State defense held Georgia Southern shooters to only 36.5 percent from the field. The Panthers also kept Tavarus Webb to 3-of-12 shooting in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 22-11, Georgia State went on a 15-0 run with 10:23 left in the first half to take a 26-22 lead. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 44-41.
Georgia Southern kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 72-53 advantage before Georgia State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Hamilton's three, to shrink the deficit to 72-60 with 7:53 to go in the contest. Georgia Southern responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 90-67. Georgia State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 26 points.
