Panthers Open Conference Play Hosting South Alabama

ATLANTA – Georgia State (12-6) kicks off Sun Belt Conference play this weekend with a three-game home series against South Alabama (10-6) at the GSU Baseball Complex. The series begins Friday at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday matchup at 2:00 p.m. and a Sunday finale at 1:00 p.m. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.

Panthers Off to a Hot Start
Head coach Brad Stromdahl's squad is enjoying its best start since 2011, boasting a 12-6 record entering conference play. Senior second baseman Kaleb Freeman has been a key catalyst, leading the nation with 12 doubles and 28 walks while ranking in the top 20 in on-base percentage (.573). Michael Maginnis leads the team with 25 hits, while senior Colin Hynek has provided the power, launching a team-high seven home runs.

As a team, Georgia State ranks 17th nationally in home runs (29), with 10 different Panthers leaving the yard this season.

On the Mound
The Panthers will rely on a pitching staff that has been solid through non-conference play. Junior Cole Roberts is coming off an eight-inning performance against Western Carolina, while senior Caleb White leads the team with 30 strikeouts. The bullpen has also been effective, with Carlos Carmona yet to allow a run in five appearances.

Scouting South Alabama
The Jaguars (10-6) enter the weekend fresh off a dominant midweek win over No. 13 Ole Miss, defeating the Rebels 14-5. South Alabama has historically had the upper hand in this matchup, leading the all-time series 29-12. However, Georgia State has been competitive in recent years, winning 11 of the last 30 meetings.

Key Storylines to Watch

  • Battle of the Bats: Both teams feature power-heavy lineups, making this a potential high-scoring series.
  • Freeman's Impact: The senior second baseman is among the nation's best in on-base ability and extra-base hits.
  • Can the Pitching Hold Up? Georgia State's team ERA sits at 6.28, and limiting damage against a dangerous South Alabama lineup will be key.

First pitch is set for Friday at 6:00 p.m. as the Panthers look to start conference play on a high note.
