MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Kaleb Freeman and William Maginnis each homered, and Georgia State (10-2) rolled to an 8-1 victory over Alabama State (5-8) on Tuesday night at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Freeman continued his torrid start to the season, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, two RBIs, and two walks, while Maginnis added a solo shot in the fifth inning as part of his two-hit night. John Beverley also had a strong performance at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a stolen base.
On the mound, Tysen Benford (1-0) delivered a dominant start, allowing just one run on seven hits over six innings while striking out two. Brooks Gorman and Carlos Carmona combined for three scoreless innings of relief to secure the win.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Freeman launched a solo home run, and Jesse Donohoe doubled home Michael Maginnis. Alabama State responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Georgia State extended the lead in the fourth when Beverley singled home a run.
Maginnis' solo homer in the fifth made it 4-1, and the Panthers broke the game open late with two runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-out RBI double from Cooper Milford, and two more in the eighth to seal the win.
Georgia State returns to the field tomorrow, March 5th, as they travel to Athens to take on number #5 Georgia at 3:00 p.m.
