Faddoul Scores Twice as Panthers Open Sun Belt Play With 4-2 Win

ATLANTA – Behind a brace from senior forward Aaliyah Faddoul, Georgia State women's soccer opened Sun Belt Conference play with a 4-2 victory over Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex. The Panthers improved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

The Panthers came out on the front foot, generating 18 first-half shots and breaking through twice in quick succession. Hina Suzuki opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a composed finish, her fifth goal of the season. Just three minutes later, Emily Glenn doubled the advantage with her fourth goal of the year, giving GSU a 2-0 lead.

Southern Miss clawed one back late in the half when Paula Castro Garcia scored in the 44th minute off a pass from Zayla Reagan, sending the teams into the break at 2-1.

Faddoul restored the two-goal cushion early in the second half, scoring in the 50th minute after continued GSU pressure. The Golden Eagles made things interesting again in the 62nd minute when Raquelle Mitchell converted a penalty kick to cut the lead to 3-2.

But the Panthers sealed the result in the 84th minute when Faddoul struck again, finishing a ball from Therese Brink to secure her first multi-goal performance of the season. The senior forward finished with a match-high eight shots, six on target, and now leads the team with 11 points on the year.

In total, Georgia State outshot Southern Miss 21-5 and earned five corner kicks to the visitors' one. Brook Nelson added two shots on goal, while Suzuki and Glenn combined for three more.

Goalkeeper Ariana Anderson made two saves in the net, while the Panthers' back line limited the Golden Eagles to just five total attempts. Southern Miss played the final 15 minutes down a player after defender Eduarda Flores Fuculo was sent off with a red card.

Georgia State will continue Sun Belt play next weekend, hosting App State on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. before traveling to Marshall this weekend to take on the Thundering Herd.
