ATLANTA — Georgia State volleyball (6-10, 0-4 SBC) had three players record double-doubles in Friday night's five-set match against James Madison, falling 3-2 at GSU Sports Arena.
Manuela Altieri Liev helped lead the Panthers with 17 kills and 11 digs, while Sophia Johnson added 14 kills and 11 digs. Annelore Engels posted 56 assists and 20 digs, and Akira Burt led all players with 24 kills. Georgia State finished with a 71-60 advantage in kills and hit .276 as a team.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Georgia State rallied from an eight-point deficit at 11-3, cutting the JMU lead to one twice, but the Dukes held on for a 25-22 win. The Panthers hit .200 with 12 kills.
SET 2 | The Panthers answered with a 25-20 win to even the match. After four lead changes, Georgia State took the lead for good at 17-16 and finished with 19 kills while hitting .227. Burt led the way with six kills, followed by five from Altieri Liev and three each from Johnson and Jayden Eaker. Engels recorded 17 assists in the set.
SET 3 | Georgia State took control with a 25-18 victory to move ahead 2-1. The Panthers hit .367 with 14 kills and broke a 17-17 tie with an 8-1 run to close the set. Mina Olgar served six straight points during the run, including an ace, while Johnson led the attack with four kills on .400 hitting. The Panthers also recorded three aces from Elizondo, Engels and Olgar.
SET 4 | JMU answered with a 25-20 win to force a fifth set. The Dukes recorded seven aces in the frame and closed the set with a 3-0 run from 22-20. Georgia State hit .400 with 15 kills, led by seven from Burt on nine attempts and four from Altieri Liev.
SET 5 | The deciding set featured eight ties and three lead changes, with neither team leading by more than two points. Georgia State held an 11-9 advantage in kills and hit .231, but JMU closed out the match 15-13 on a block. Burt recorded five kills, while Johnson hit .750 with three kills on four attempts.
