Panthers Fall in 11-Inning Battle at Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Georgia State fell 3-2 in 11 innings to Jacksonville State on Tuesday afternoon at Rudy Abbott Field.

The Panthers move to 3-1 on the season, while the Gamecocks even their record at 2-2.

Georgia State struck first in the second inning. Nick Garagozzo worked a leadoff walk and advanced into scoring position before John Beverley delivered an RBI single to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Wesley Bass came home on a double play to extend the advantage to 2-0.

Cole Roberts turned in a strong start on the mound. The senior right-hander worked 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and no walks on 74 pitches.

Jacksonville State broke through in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1. The Gamecocks tied the game in the eighth after a double and two walks loaded the bases before a hit-by-pitch forced in the tying run. Will Bartkoski entered in relief and induced an inning-ending double play to keep the score even at 2-2.

The Panthers had opportunities late. Beverley, who finished 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and stolen base, reached third in the ninth after swiping second and advancing on the throw, but Georgia State was unable to bring him home. The Panthers also put the go-ahead run on second in the 10th following a walk and a throwing error, but Jacksonville State escaped the jam.

In the 11th, the Gamecocks capitalized on a leadoff single and a bunt base hit. A throwing error allowed the winning run to score, as the final run was unearned. Jacob Crews was charged with the loss.

Georgia State totaled seven hits and three walks but struck out 14 times and left eight runners on base. Jacksonville State recorded nine hits in the contest.

The Panthers travel to Macon to take on in-state rival Mercer tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
