CARROLLTON, Ga. – Georgia State softball (4-0, 0-0 SBC) continued its undefeated stretch Saturday at the UWG Opening Weekend Event, rallying past host West Georgia for an 11-6 win before topping Austin Peay 8-3 to complete a perfect 4-0 weekend, marking the program's best start since 2010.
The Panthers showed resilience in game one, breaking a late tie with a five-run seventh inning to pull away from the Wolves, then followed with a balanced offensive performance in game two as all nine starters reached base safely.
GAME 1: GSU 11, WEST GEORGIA 6
Georgia State found itself trailing early after West Georgia jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Panthers answered in the third inning, getting on the board with a two-run frame highlighted by a run-scoring single from Maia Mumpfield to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Wolves extended their lead to 4-2, but Georgia State's offense erupted in the sixth inning. The Panthers plated four runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single from Mumpfield, to take a 6-4 advantage.
West Georgia battled back to tie the game at six, setting the stage for a decisive seventh inning. Georgia State broke the game open with five runs in the frame, once again sparked by a two-run single from Mumpfield, as the Panthers surged ahead 11-6 and never looked back.
Makayla Stephens (2-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.2 perfect innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts.
GAME 2: GSU 8, AUSTIN PEAY 3
The Panthers carried their momentum into the nightcap, striking immediately in the bottom of the first inning. Georgia State pushed four runs across in the opening frame, highlighted by a two-run single from Caitlyn Hall, to grab a 4-0 lead.
Austin Peay cut into the margin, but Georgia State responded in the fourth inning with two more runs. Chloe Hatcher drove in a run with a single to extend the Panthers' lead to 6-2.
The Panthers kept the Governors off the board over the next two innings while adding insurance. Georgia State made it 7-2 in the fifth, then added one more in the sixth as Mumpfield crossed the plate to make it 8-3. The score held as the Panthers closed out the win.
Makayla Stephens (3-0) was dominant in the circle, going the distance. She allowed three earned runs on four hits, walked two, and struck out seven to earn her third win of the season.
Offensively, Georgia State was paced by Hatcher, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Dillyn Suggs added a solo home run, while Hall finished with two hits and two RBIs.
