ATLANTA (Jan. 7, 2007) ? Senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led all scorers with 26 points as Georgia State saw its six-game win streak come to halt with an 84-61 loss to Colonial Athletic Association foe James Madison Sunday afternoon at the Ga. State Sports Arena. The Panthers drop to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the CAA, while the Dukes improve to 11-2 on the season and remain undefeated in league play at 3-0.
Sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) also finished in double figures, scoring 12 for State, which lost its first game at home this season (5-1).
Four players scored in double figures for the Dukes', led by 22 points from center Meredith Alexis. Forward Tamera Young recorded 20 and forward Shirley McCall collected 16. Guard Lesley Dickinson posted 11. Alexis registered a game-high 14 rebounds and Young tallied 10 boards.
Georgia State entered the contest ranked 18th in the nation in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to just 34.6 percent from the floor. James Madison, however, managed to shoot the ball well despite the Panthers' defense, and passed the ball efficiently. The Dukes ended the contest connecting on 55 percent of their shots and dished out 21 assists.
James Madison led throughout the game, staking a first-half high 11-point lead, 28-17 with five minutes, remaining following a 3-pointer from Young. Georgia State freshman guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.) and sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) combined to bookend a pair of 3-pointers that led to the Panthers' trimming the deficit to 35-30 at halftime.
The Dukes continued to shoot the ball well in the second period, making 53 percent of their shots, and out scored the Panthers 49-31 in the stanza. Leading 38-34 with 17:54 left in the game, two made free throws from McCall spurred the Dukes on a 14-5 run for a 14-point margin, 53-39, with 13:50 remaining. State made four field goals over the next 10 minutes as the Dukes' lead grew to 76-52 with 3:23 left on the clock. JMU held its biggest lead of the contest, 84-56, with 1:21 remaining in the game.
Georgia State shot 34 percent for the game, shooting 34 percent in the first half and 35 percent in the second, and was out rebounded 42-34. The Panthers totaled 14 assists compared the Dukes' 21, and both teams were even at 14 turnovers apiece.
Georgia State, which goes on the road for the first time since Dec. 19, continues Colonial Athletic Association play Thursday at defending conference champion Old Dominion. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
