Softball Splits Twin Bill at First Pitch Classic

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. (02/10/07) - The Georgia State (1-1) softball team, led by senior captain Alison Bradford who went 3-for-4 with a three run homer, defeated the University of Alabama Birmingham (1-1) 10-2 in the second game of the twin bill at the Georgia State First Pitch Classic on Saturday afternoon at Bob Heck Field.  The Panthers dropped their season opener to Tennessee Tech (1-1), 4-2.

Bradford (McDonough, Ga./Henry County) started the offense for the Panthers with a solo home run to right center field in the bottom of the second inning to give State a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the fourth, Bradford doubled to right center before Jackie Jaegle (Kennesaw, Ga./Kell) hit a single to plate Bradford.  Rachel Cunningham (Alpharetta, Ga/South Forsyth) hit a double followed by a Lauren Fetters (Canton, Ga./Sequoyah) single to cross Jaegle and Cunningham to give the Panthers a 4-0 advantage. UAB scored its first run of the game when Leigh Walker hit a single to center field.  With one out, Holly Krazan singled to plate Ashley Thomas for the Blazers' second and final run of the inning.

The Panthers exploded with four more runs in the fifth inning, beginning with Bradford's double down the right line to plate Nichole Griffin (Leesburg, Ga./Lee County).  With two runners on, Jaegle smacked a homer to center field to give State an 8-2 lead.  In the sixth, Jaegle hit the game winning triple as Griffin and Mary Kathryn Branan (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) crossed home plate.  Georgia State won its first game of the season 10-2 and evened its record at 1-1.

Madi Gore (1-0) earned her first win as a Panther with five strikeouts and only giving up two runs.  Kayla Harris (0-1) took the loss for the Blazers.

The season opener saw Georgia State score two runs, while giving up four.  Tennessee Tech scored in the third inning off a fielder's choice decision.  The Golden Eagles scored again in the fourth on back-to-back singles.

In the fifth frame, Stephanie Fischer scored on an error followed by Sarah Street's score on Katie Sutherland's single to give Tennessee Tech a 4-0 lead.

State cut into the lead with Fetters scoring in the fifth and Griffin crossing the plate in the sixth inning.  The Panthers could not score in the seventh, falling to Tennessee Tech 4-2.

Ashley Cowan (0-1) took the loss for State while Tennessee Tech's Sarah Street (1-0) grabbed its win.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow against Virginia Tech (1-1).  Game time is slated for 12:15 p.m.
