GSU Comes Up Short in Upset Bid

Johnson leads GSU with 11 points.

ATLANTA – Georgia State's women's basketball team managed to slow down the up-tempo Troy offense Saturday, but the Trojans fought off the Panthers to win 71-57 at the Sports Arena.

Entering Saturday, Troy ranked second in the Sun Belt at 4-1. The Trojans were averaging nearly 80 points a game.

The Panthers, who have been short-handed due to injuries for three games now, managed to hold Troy to under 70 points until the final seconds.

GSU shared the wealth on offense with all eight Panthers who played finishing with at least a field goal.

Freshman Joelle Johnson led GSU with 11 points off the bench on 5-of-9 shooting. Freshmen Taylor Henderson and Moriah Taylor each finished with 9 points. Fellow freshmen Kennedy Powell and Kamryn Dziak totaled 8 points each.

Georgia State cut Troy's lead down to two in the fourth quarter, but the Trojans ended the game on an 8-0 over the final 90 seconds to close out GSU and break the Panthers' three-game win streak in the series.

Next up for Georgia State is Georgia Southern Saturday in Statesboro. The Panthers will have Sunday off before participating in community service Monday in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. GSU will return to practice Tuesday.
