Freeman Tosses Complete-Game Shutout Against Iowa State

GSU won 1-0 against the Cyclones Sunday at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.

ATLANTA -- Savannah Freeman led Georgia State to a 1-0 win over Iowa State Sunday with a complete-game shutout at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.

Freeman held the Cyclones scoreless while sprinkling in six hits on seven innings and striking out three on the way to her first win of the young season.

The Panthers had Freeman's back on defense with freshman shortstop Daisy Hess and center fielder Skylar Mosel making several highlight plays throughout the contest.

In the top of the second with an Iowa State runner on third, Hess snagged a hard grounder and made a perfect throw home to catch the runner in a pickle trying to score. GSU retired the baserunner 6-2-5-3-6 with Hess applying the tag diving to prevent the run.

Iowa State threatened again in the top of the fourth, this time smacking a rope to deep center field that Mosel got a good break on and was able to haul in at the wall.

GSU broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fifth with some timely hitting. Mosel doubled to center to lead off the inning. Baylee Sexton then successfully sacrificed Mosel to third with a bunt, bringing up Sydney Stavro.

Early in Stavro's at-bat, Mosel got caught too far off from third and was in a rundown. She forced a couple throws before she somehow dodged a tag and returned to third base safely. A few pitches later, Stavro hit a tailing fly ball to foul territory beyond the GSU dugout on the third base line. Iowa State's left fielder hustled hard to get over and make the catch and Mosel tagged up, beating the throw by just inches with a nice slide around the catcher to make it 1-0.

That would be all the run support Freeman would need as she worked around a pair of runners in the sixth and got another good catch from Mosel in center field in the seventh to defeat the Cyclones.

The 1-0 win is the first win over a Power-5 team at home for GSU since the Panthers beat Georgia Tech 3-2 on Feb. 14, 2018.

Next up for the Panthers is a midweek contest against Kennesaw State Wednesday at the Heck Softball Complex.
