Late Rally Comes Up Short; Panthers Fall 5-4 at No. 2 Vandy

DeAngelo Abboud Hit His First Homer

Trying to defeat No. 2-ranked Vanderbilt for the second straight day, Georgia State tied the game with three runs in the seventh inning, but Vanderbilt prevailed 5-4 on a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh.

The Commodores (4-1) evened the series with GSU (3-4), which won 4-2 Friday. The series concludes with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 12 p.m. ET at Hawkins Field (Please note the updated start time).

The Panthers trailed 4-1 after six innings with their only run coming on a solo home run by DeAngelo Abboud, who went deep in the third inning for his first homer in a GSU uniform.

Josh Smith led off the seventh with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Jonathan Ponder laid down a bunt single, but the throw from third base was wild, allowing Smith to score from second.

After Kyle Hilton singled to put runners at first and third, it was Abboud's turn to bunt. The pitcher could not make a play and was charged with an error, allowing Ponder to score and bring the Panthers within 4-3.

Kalen Puckett singled to load the bases, and Will Mize brought home the tying run with a groundout.

But Vanderbilt answered immediately as Carter Young led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer to left center, and the Commodores closed it out.

Vanderbilt jumped in front with four runs in the first two frames on Dominic Keegan's two-run homer in the first and a pair of sacrifice flies in the second, but the GSU bullpen shut them down the rest of the way, except for Young's solo homer. The Panther defense contributed two double plays.

Both teams finished with seven hits.
