Pearson, Watson Lead 4-3 Win in Sun Belt Opener at ULM

MONROE, LA – Freshman Dalton Pearson drove in the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning to back a strong start by Ryan Watson and lead Georgia State to a 4-3 victory at ULM in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams.

Watson (2-2), the sophomore right-hander, did not allow an earned run in six innings. He gave up six hits and struck out seven while walking only one to pick up his second victory of the season.

Pearson, the rookie from John's Creek High School, was 2-for-5 with two RBI, while center fielder Kyle Riesselmann was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

With Georgia State (5-14, 1-0 Sun Belt) trailing 2-1, Cameron Jones led off the sixth with a single, DeAngelo Abboud drew a two-out walk, and Riesselmann singled through the left side to bring home Jones with the tying run. After Blaine Marchman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Pearson delivered a two-run single to right field to put the Panthers ahead 4-2.

In the bottom half of the inning, Pearson came through again with a key defensive play. After ULM scored one to pull within 4-3, the right fielder threw out the potential tying run at the plate for the third out, keeping the Panthers in front.

GSU relievers Trey Horton, Chad Treadway and Joseph Brandon combined for the final three innings. ULM (7-7, 0-1 Sun Belt) put the tying run in scoring position in each inning, but Treadway got the final out in the seventh and then struck out the side in the eighth. Brandon pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.

Griffin Cheney drove in the Panthers' first run on a sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning.
