Cheney Homers, Jones Has Strong Start in 3-1 Loss to ULM

Sun Belt Series Even at 1-1

MONROE, LA – Griffin Cheney homered for Georgia State, but the Panthers fell 3-1 at ULM Saturday at Warhawk Field, evening the Sun Belt Conference series at one game apiece.

After Georgia State's 4-3 win on Friday, the three-game series will be decided Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.

Cheney hit his first homer of the season and the second of his career. The junior second baseman's solo shot to the opposite field gave Georgia State a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning.

But ULM answered in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by Mason Holt, and then the Warhawks added an insurance run in the eighth.

Cheney's homer was the Panthers' only hit of the game. ULM starter Ty Barnes (1-1) was outstanding, allowing one run on one hit over seven innings with five strikeouts. Besides Cheney, the only other baserunners he allowed came on a hit by pitch (Ryan Glass) and a walk to Kyle Riesselmann, both in the second inning.

The loss shouldn't overshadow a strong start by GSU left-hander Cameron Jones, who pitched into the eighth inning. He allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Jones' outing is the longest of his career and the longest by any GSU hurler this season.
