Rally Comes Up Just Short in 9-7 Loss at ULM

Puckett Homers, Smith Goes 4-for-5

MONROE, LA – Josh Smith had four hits and two RBI and Kalen Puckett homered, but Georgia State's late rally came up just short in the Panthers' 9-7 loss at ULM Sunday at Warhawk Field.

ULM (9-7, 2-1) won the Sun Belt Conference series, two games to one.

Playing its 16th straight road game, Georgia State (5-16, 1-2 Sun Belt) fell behind 9-0 after four innings but rallied to score seven over the final three frames and bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth.

Puckett started the late rally with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. That is the first career home run for the junior infielder in his 106th career game.

The Panthers added three more runs in the eighth. Dalton Pearson and Will Mize led off with singles, and then Josh Smith singled home Pearson. Ashby Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to pull GSU within 9-5. With two outs, Kyle Riesselmann added a run-scoring single to make it 9-6.

After Brandon Haston pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for the Panthers, Griffin Cheney led off the ninth a single, moved to second on a passed ball and took third on a fly ball. With two outs, Josh Smith delivered his fourth hit of the day, scoring Cheney and bringing GSU within 9-7. But ULM managed to get the third out and end the Panthers' improbable rally.

ULM jumped in front with a six-run second inning, aided by three walks, an error, a wild pitch and two infield singles. The Panthers appeared to be out of the inning after just one run had scored, but on an apparent inning-ending strike out-caught stealing, confusion over the count on the batter allowed a run to score and kept the inning alive.

After a three-run homer in the fourth inning made in 9-0, four GSU relievers held the Warhawks scoreless over the final four innings, highlighted by Dawson Sweatt, who struck out the side in the sixth.

Josh Smith, the sophomore outfielder, finished 4-for-5 with two RBI. Ashby Smith and Cheney added two hits each.

Georgia State finally returns home to host Mercer Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
